SOUTHGATE and Winchmore Hill police stations could shut under cost-cutting proposals announced yesterday by the Met.
It would mean Enfield would lose half of it’s police stations, with Enfield Town and Edmonton police stations remaining open.
The proposals have been put forward by the London Mayor’s Office For Police And Crime and the Metropolitan Police, who aim to save £140million each year until April 2016. The strategy, which will be consulted on over the coming six weeks, is aimed at reducing the number of inefficient and costly buildings being run by the Met.
Adding to the concern for residents living in the west of the borough is the news that both Whetstone Police Station and Barnet Police station, in High Barnet are due to close, under the plans.
However the Metropolitan Police deny that the decision will jeopardise public safety.
A police spokeswoman said: “We are reviewing our front counter services at police stations to see how effectively these services are used. We have looked closely at how many and what types of crime are reported in person at police stations, which will help inform any decisions to alter opening hours or close front counters whilst being there where victims need us.”
Residents can have a say on the proposals at a police consultation event, taking place on Monday at 8pm at the Civic Centre, in Silver Street, Enfield.
