A 32-year-old man was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in prison for bludgeoning another man to death in an abandoned hotel.
The Larnaca Assizes found Stelios Mavronicolas guilty of the manslaughter death of Angelos Fedonos, 46, at the Beau Rivage hotel in Larnaca on July 31.
In handing down the sentence Judge Nicos Santis described the crime as a tragic waste of human life.
“Manslaughter sentences must be severe enough to act as a deterrent. The defendant’s decision to leave the heavily wounded victim in an abandoned hotel was unacceptable.”
The trial heard that the victim first contacted Mavronicolas through a newspaper advertisement for an “erotic, relaxing and sensual massage for ladies” and later, seeking a homosexual relationship, began to harass him.
“The defendant was aware of his actions and ashamed. He acted in a selfish manner by not attempting to stop the harassment through other means.”
The autopsy showed that Phaedonos died from trauma to the head caused by four blows from a shovel handle that was found near the crime scene.
