Champions APOEL dropped two valuable points when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by AEK, while in Limassol cup-holders Apollon defeated Omonia 1-0.
The Larnaca side, who beat APOEL twice last year, opened the score on the 39th minute with Nestoras Mitides.
APOEL was able to regroup and equalise in the second half after an impressive run by Stathis Aloneftis (56th) .
There were plenty of missed opportunities on both sides, as the game took on a frenetic pace. But neither team were able to clinch a winning goal, with the match ending in the first draw ever between them.
In Limassol, Apollon’s Gaston Sangoy put the home side ahead within the first minutes (51 seconds). The team was able to hang on to the slender lead through the 90 minutes to clinch their second victory in the league.
The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession but were unable to convert, while Apollon concentrated on counter-attacks.
