The body of a newborn baby has been found on a rubbish tip in West Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire Police said the baby was found on Wednesday by staff at the Valley Road waste site in Shipley.

Police said they had concerns for the health of the mother and asked her to contact officers.

The dead baby is the second found on the site in recent years. In 2011 the body of a newborn girl was discovered among waste.

Det Supt Mark Ridley said: “The mother has clearly been through a terribly traumatic experience and I would ask her to come forward and speak to us.”

The detective, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said his priority was the welfare of the mother and making sure she receives the medical care she needs.

A post-mortem examination will take place later to determine the cause of death.

In the 2011 case the mother of the child was never discovered and a post-mortem examination proved inconclusive in determining the cause of death.
