Enfield Borough Council is seeking fitness fans to help get the borough “fighting fit” this year.

The authority is calling on people to act as volunteer sport and activity promoters for its Everybody Active Team during its Get Fit for 2013 programme of events.

The move comes after the Annual Report of The Director of Public Health revealed last month that work is needed to tackle childhood obesity in the borough.

According to the report, 14.6 per cent of reception-age children in Enfield are obese – more than five per cent above the average in England.

Councillor Bambos Charalambous, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “If you were involved in the Olympics or even if you just love fitness or sport, why not use your enthusiasm to inspire others and become a volunteer for Enfield Council?

“There are so many great events and sessions you can become involved in which can help get others as passionate for sport and healthy activities as you are, and get people fighting fit for 2013.”

The council’s team is organising activities including free walks, sessions for disabled people, and a free street active programme for young people.
