Head to the Thames for the St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival, a wonderful river parade taking place as part of the 2013 Thames Festival. The stunning boat display sees over 40 historic vessels at the central marina, adorned with bunting and flags especially for the occasion, as well as for the public to admire.
Close to history
Now in its sixth year, the St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival enables the public to see some amazing historic boats up close and even board a selection of them. Previous events have seen exhibitions and arts activities take place on board vessels and this jubilant annual event regularly sees hundreds of Londoners embrace the festival atmosphere and celebrate the city’s famous waterway.
Special ships
A particularly special highlight for this year’s event is the appearance of the Queen’s rowbarge, the Gloriana, a beautiful river boat that was first seen as the lead vessel during the Queen’s Jubilee and was commissioned specially as a gift to Her Majesty. Other vessels to look out for at the St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival include a group of Dunkirk Little Ships from the 1940s that will be open for guided tours.
Entertainment
The Thames festival is taking place for 10 days in 2013, with the St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival being held over two weekends instead of one, so you can be sure that this event is going to be bigger than ever, with a plethora of exciting shows awaiting eager Londoners. Visitors can take part in Sea Cadet displays, including knot tying, and can get involved in nautical themed activities for all ages, and if you fancy a bite to eat, why not grab some gourmet food from the Docks Good Food Market.
The St Katharine Docks Classic Boat Festival takes place at weekends from Saturday 7th – Sunday 15th September 2013. Entry is free
