House President Yiannakis Omirou called on the international community and the EU to turn to Ankara and exert pressure so to abandon its gunboat diplomacy.

Speaking Sunday, House President said that all those who are interested for the stability and security in the region, must call on Turkey to comply with the international law and its EU obligations, in order for its European course to continue.

Omirou also said that Cyprus must take advantage of the fact that it is an EU member state and to take initiatives, in coordination and cooperation with Greece, for the termination of the occupation and the division of our country.

House President also said that Turkey’s intransigence stance and its views on a two-state solution cannot be accepted, because they violate the international law and the UN Resolutions on Cyprus.

He also condemned Turkey’s threats as regard Cyprus’ sovereign right to explore and exploit the natural gas reserves in its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Repeated UN-led rounds of peace talks have so far failed to bring about a negotiated settlement that would reunite the country. Talks are expected to resume between the two Cypriot communities in autumn.
