A tenant has been traumatised by the state of her home as the roof collapsed on her kitchen.

Maria Nicholaides, 52, has rented The Fairway in Palmers Green with her two children since 2007.

Since moving in, cracks have developed in the walls, damp pervaded the house and last week the kitchen ceiling gave way, injuring Miss Nicholaides’ daughter Angelina, 16.

Miss Nicholaides, who is diabetic and registered disabled, said: “I just can’t handle this anymore; the house has gradually got worse.

“There are massive cracks outside my daughter’s window, I’ve had no heating in mine or my son’s room for four years and after what happened last week I feel like giving up.”

Her landlord, Edmonton Green Councillor Jayne Buckland used to use the property from time to time before the family moved in after they lost their home and business.

Miss Nicholaides said: “The roof collapsing could have been avoided if she had done something about it.

“Now I can’t cook or do anything, it has been a living nightmare. What is even worse is that she is laying the blame completely on us. Why would we do this to our own home?

“We are all very upset here and I am suffering from depression as a result of everything we have gone through, I can’t even hoover without thinking the whole house is going to come down.”

Cllr Buckland said: “I instructed a builder to go to the house immediately. I asked him to do everything necessary make good the ceiling as quickly as possible.”
