Ice cream man crushed by van
A 61-year-old man was crushed to death in Larnaca yesterday when he attempted to stop his runaway ice-cream van from rolling down a hill by diving in front of it.
According to the police report, George Andreou was about to drive off to work with his 25-year-old daughter in the passenger seat of the van at around 10am when the accident occurred. He stopped the vehicle outside his house in order to close the gate to the driveway when the van which had its engine running begin to roll down the steep slope on the Alethriko to Anglisidon Road.
He called out to his daughter to pull the handbrake but when he realised she couldn’t hear him he threw himself in front of the van and was knocked down.
Neighbours came running out of their homes after hearing the commotion and called an ambulance which took Andreou to Larnaca General Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
The fire services Emergency Response Unit and police are investigating the circumstances under which the accident occurred. An initial examination of the van showed that the handbrake was down.
Andreou leaves behind a wife, three children and grandchildren
