APOEL boss Paulo Sergio has made his eighth signing days before his side take on Maribor in their opening Champions League qualifier after agreeing terms with Nigerian striker Tony.
The 24-year-old will join fellow new recruits Joao Guilherme, Tiago Gomes, Costakis Artymatas, Christian, Cillian Sheridan, Esmael Goncalves and Vinicius at the Nicosia club. Another new face in the squad is that of Pieros Sotiriou who had agreed to join APOEL in January.
An announcement by the club yesterday read, “APOEL Ltd announced that it has agreed a preliminary deal with footballer Anthony Nnaduzor Nwakaeme. He is expected in Cyprus within the next few days. His contract will be officially activated upon completion of his medical.”
A product of the Vejle Football Academy in Denmark, Tony made his professional bow in Romania in 2010. He played for three seasons at Universitatea Cluj where scored ten times in 47 appearances in between short spells with Ariesul Turda and Petrolul.
The 1.85m striker is the brother of Dickson Nwakaeme who has in the past played in Denmark and Finland but is now plying his trade in Malaysia.
Paulo Sergio has seen his side win just one of their seven preseason friendlies and with Omonia and Anorthosis both suffering early exits from Europe last week, APOEL fans remain jittery ahead of the visit of Maribor.
Some of the key players to exit APOEL this summer include Alexandros Tziolis, Helio Pinto, Dudu Biton and Christos Karipidis.
