China and Cyprus to advance relations in education field

China’s ambassador to Cyprus, Liu Xinsheng stressed Friday that China’s vision to advance development could be to Cyprus’ advantage since there are many good opportunities for cooperation in the field of energy, commerce, education and tourism.

During a meeting with Education and Culture Minister Kyriakos Kenevezos, Liu assured about the significance which the Chinese side attributes to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

He said that “both sides have come very close in the last years” and referred to the significant increase of arrivals by Chinese nationals who chose to come to Cyprus either for studies, investment or tourism.

Welcoming the Ambassador, Kenevezos referred to the close relations between Cyprus and China, noting that the bonds that have developed “are based on common values and create a solid foundation and friendship between the two countries”.

The Education Minister thanked the ambassador for China’s long term support in the just demands of Cyprus, and assured him of the significance which Cyprus attaches in strengthening relations.

According to an official statement, “the two sides were briefed on the course of implementation of various commitments to issues which are relevant to the Ministry of Education.

Already underway are the promotion of mutual recognition of degrees, the setting up of the Confucius Foundation in Cyprus and renewing the cultural cooperation programme between the two countries.

The two sides agreed to promote practical measures to help efforts for closer cooperation, starting with an official visit of the Chinese Education Minister to the island to renew and sign a memorandum for cultural cooperation.

They also agreed that in an effort to promote the agreement for recognition of degrees the Cypriot Minister will pay an official visit to China.
